Batteries are the only server components guaranteed to fail on schedule. RAID cache batteries (BBUs) and flash-backed write cache capacitors degrade over a few years, and when they do the controller silently disables write-back caching — array performance falls off a cliff for want of a sub-$100 part (see RAID controllers). UPS battery cartridges age the same way, discovered at the worst possible moment: during the outage they were bought for.
