Mayco SW-252 Blue Opal is a stoneware high-fire glaze designed for cone 5-10 firing, capable of use at cone 10 in oxidation or reduction. At cone 6, it is a medium blue semi-transparent to fully opaque gloss glaze. Thinner applications yield a transparent blue haze, while thicker coatings result in an opaque finish. Surface textures can cause the glaze to collect and streak grayish blue. Light applications on brown and buff bodies can produce a transparent green-blue gloss finish. At cone 10, it becomes more transparent and can develop red mottling in heavy reduction. The glaze is semifluid, meaning it adds mobility to glaze combinations without running off the ware excessively. It is generally dinnerware-safe when used as directed. Recommended application is on soft-fired bisque (cone 04/06) with one to three coats, allowing each coat to dry.
