Rambus Dynamic Random Access Memory (RDRAM) is a high-speed synchronous dynamic RAM technology developed by Rambus Inc. and introduced in 1999. Unlike standard SDRAM, RDRAM uses a narrow 16-bit or 18-bit serial bus that operates at high clock frequencies, reaching effective speeds of 800MHz (PC800) and 1066MHz (PC1066). It was widely adopted for use in high-performance computing, the Nintendo 64, Sony PlayStation 2, and Intel Pentium 4 systems utilizing the Intel 850 chipset series. RDRAM modules, known as RIMMs (Rambus In-line Memory Modules), are characterized by their integrated heat spreaders which are necessary to manage the significant heat generated by the high-frequency interface logic. A unique requirement of RDRAM systems is that all memory slots must be filled; empty slots require a Continuity RIMM (CRIMM) to maintain the serial signal loop.

Key Features

RDRAM was a breakthrough in memory bandwidth for the late 1990s, offering speeds far exceeding the contemporary PC133 SDRAM. It utilizes Rambus Signaling Logic (RSL) to achieve high-speed data transfers on a narrow bus. Although technically superior in bandwidth, it was eventually superseded by DDR SDRAM due to high manufacturing costs and licensing fees.
