R720 and R720xd servers share the same 12th-generation hot-plug supply bays, with 495W, 750W and 1100W options. The xd variant carries up to twice the drives, and a fully loaded 12-bay chassis plus dual processors is a very different load than a lightly built 8-bay R720, so match the replacement to the wattage already installed rather than guessing down. GPU configurations require the 1100W units. Both supplies in a redundant pair must be identical in wattage; the system reports a fault otherwise. Supplies swap hot without a shutdown. What do I need for a GPU configuration?

Dell's GPU-enabled R720 configurations run the 1100W supplies as a matched pair. If you are retrofitting GPUs onto a lower-wattage pair, plan to replace both units.

Can I check my installed supplies without pulling one?

Yes. iDRAC reports wattage and status for each supply, and a service tag lookup gives us the exact factory part. The label on the unit itself remains the definitive identifier.
