Before ordering an R510 supply, identify which chassis you have. Dell sold the R510 in two power configurations: a non-redundant chassis with a single cabled supply, and a redundant chassis with hot-plug bays. They are not convertible; hot-plug units will not install in a non-redundant chassis, and the cabled supply will not fit a redundant one. The cabled unit is a lower-wattage supply, while redundant chassis take 750W or 1100W hot-plug units that must be installed as a matched pair. Hot-plug replacement works only in the redundant chassis, where a failed unit swaps under power. The Dell part number on the supply label settles any doubt, and if the server predates your records, send the service tag and we will confirm the original power configuration free.

How do I know if my R510 has redundant or non-redundant power?

Check the rear of the chassis. Redundant units sit in hot-plug bays with handles and release latches; the non-redundant chassis has a single fixed supply with internal cabling. A service tag lookup also tells us which chassis Dell built.

Can I convert a non-redundant R510 to redundant power?

No. The two chassis differ in power distribution hardware, and hot-plug supplies will not install in a non-redundant chassis. If redundancy is a requirement, the practical path is a redundant-chassis server.

Do both hot-plug supplies need to match?

Yes. Run the same wattage in both bays. When replacing a failed unit, match the Dell part number on the surviving supply's label, or send us your service tag for a free lookup.
